A more complete update...

Well, Mr. Twisty is doing great. After a few days, the fur started to fall off on his hind leg, but it's growing back now and he is getting around just fine.

Life here is insane right now. School is out and I'm trying to find a groove. I'm bottom heavy on kids with six of them age eight and under. It's been too cool to go to the pool, too wet and muddy to play outside. We are playing with a daily schedule and buddy system. If I don't make a plan for the summer, we'll never get to do anything fun.

So how is everyone doing?

Ruby is enjoying tap and ballet class. She spends a lot of time making up silly songs. Tonight it was something like, "brush your teeth after you squish that bug..."

Ralph...oh gosh. He's going through a real independent phase. He has a very high opinion of himself and doesn't like to need help, even when he needs help. He recently locked himself in the bathroom at Spangles, a local burger place. I stood outside the door agonizing whether I should go find a manager or just give the boy some more time to listen to me and open the door. I waited. And listened. I could hear him washing his hands (so PROUD!!) and pulling out paper towels. Then he opened up the door with a "what's the big deal" look on his face...then asked for help with the snap on his pants. Oy!

Zhen has grown up so much. He struggles at school with work ethic...or they struggle with him. Not sure which it really is. He's been fine at home except for his LOUD vocalizing. I must shush him a hundred times a day. We are resigned to the fact that he eats stuff, and we just do our best to limit his opportunities to be alone with attractive materials.

Theo had a breakthrough over the past few months. I was preparing to share about him in more depth, but he's been backsliding lately. On the positive side, his growth hormone medication was switched over the winter and we are seeing significant weight gains. He feels so solid and chubby even...makes me happy to squeeze his ample thighs. I remember way back when we first started giving him injections that I could not find injection sites with enough subcutaneous fat.

On the negative side, his mood has gone downhill lately. He acts like he is in pain again but his tests for h. Pylori came up negative. He's really only happy when he is eating or playing in the water. That's my plan for his summer...snacks and pool time.

Max is settling in. He tolerates Ruby, who is all over him, all day long. He is learning how to eat textured food. I'm not using the blender much at all anymore. Tonight I didn't even try to mash his beans. We are still struggling with drinking. I did buy a Haberman feeder and he is learning how to suck a bit, but it's slow going. We finally had an IEP meeting for him last week and the coop has agreed to let him attend Extended School Year (summer school) for five weeks. It's a half day program, so I think it will be a great way to ease him into the school environment.

Hammy finished the school year with the most reading counts points in his whole grade. He loves to read but don't ask him to do any chores...! He's hoping to learn how to swim for real this summer. Let's hope it warms up soon.

Rose is almost done with her lessons for the year, but now that everyone else is home all day, it's tough to get her to do any lessons. She has been rock climbing at the YMCA and is getting pretty good. I may try to find her a harness of her own before the summer is over. She baked and frosted two cakes yesterday all by herself. I'm planning to teach her how to sew a sundress this next week. We are on the lookout for a reasonably priced cello for her to start on in the fall. I talked her out of playing bass...well, she did think the bass was sorta heavy when we went to try instruments.

Jordan is a rock climbing junkie. He picks the most difficult routes and tries different ways of climbing, such as using only one leg and hopping to the next foothold. He's going to try a climbing competition on Saturday. Not sure what to expect, but it should be a great learning experience.

Thomas is playing baseball and really improving. He's also swimming his first ever long course swim season. His hands and feet are HUGE, so I'm thinking that he could be quite fast if he gets his strokes down.. He would like to find some babysitting jobs. He likes kids, is patient, and has great skills in connecting with them.

Chipper is in Arizona for the summer. We miss him a lot, and not just because he is so helpful. It's great to have an extra driver in the family and another set of strong arms, but he needed to be on his own this summer. He is working at a Christian camp and having a great time. I hope he comes home ready to give his all to his senior year of high school.

Rich came home for a few weeks, but is back in California for the summer...working at a camp! I flew to Chicago to see him compete in the NCCAA track championships. He took 8th place in javelin! He is headed into his senior year at Azusa Pacific University.

Wes is working in a little town outside of Omaha. He's got a little rental house and I'm so proud of him. He's been completely independent for almost the last three years. We just don't get to see him nearly enough.

Me, I'm crazy. I'm working on event planning, non-profit fundraising, orphan care programs, helping adopting families, educating myself to advocate for him boys with DS...on top of keeping all the kids happy and alive. However, I enjoy it all. I LOVE it. I wouldn't trade my life...even in these chaotic and frustrating times.

Kitty Drama

Late Tuesday night, my daughter ran into my room crying, carrying her cat. Poor Mr. Twisty's (Mr. Twisty's Twisted Cheese Curls anyone?) hind foot was blown up like a balloon, claws popped out and toes splayed.

My first thought was a spider bite, then I looked closer. Blue stripes were buried deep and barely visible on the cat's hind leg. A ponytail holder. What!

No time to ask questions, I barked out orders, "grab a pillowcase and I'll get some scissors!) The cat was going in the pillowcase because I refuse to get shredded by kitty claws. It took some rough handling to get my hands on that back leg. He must have been in a great deal of pain. Then it took a few tries to get the scissors under the tightly wrapped band in order to snip it.

Mr. Twisty slunk away shaking that back leg. He found a spot to lay, right where he would get stepped on and he didn't move for the rest of the night. Then there was time to ask questions. Who did this? Why? How long was it on? I heard a lot of "I don't remember's."

The top of the cat's foot was dark purple, almost black. I decided to see how it looked in the morning before taking him to the vet. I called in the next morning because his whole leg was swollen, and of course, the vet wanted to see him in the office. I was offered a laser treatment to bring down the swelling. Umm...no thanks. My husband would rather not spend more than $0.75 on a lame cat, if you know what I mean.

I really wondered if Mr. Twisty would have to have that leg amputated, but today he is looking really good. The swelling has gone down considerably, though the skin is still black-ish. A certain little girl did a good deal of growing up over the past few days. Enough drama for one week, don't you think?

Happy Birthday Ralph!

Ralph turned six years old on Monday!!

When he was a baby, I would look at the six year old-ish kids with Down Syndrome and wonder, "what will Ralph be like at that age?" Now I look at 12 and 16 year olds and think the same thing. I'll probably always do that...there are so many unknowns about what his life will look like, and how far he will develop. One thing I can say for sure is that because of his attitude, his life will be great regardless of his development.

Since his actual birthday fell on a Monday, we had a sort of birthday weekend extravaganza! Grandma Linda drove up to stay with us on Saturday. We did ice cream and cake that day. I didn't do a fancy cake for Ralph, but instead I let him come to the store to pick it out. Funny boy, I showed him a few cakes that he could chose from. He wanted me to put them all into the cart!

His level of excitement during the party made for lots of great photos and videos. Blowing out the candles is always worthy of applause. He squealed with delight over every present, but went nuts over the new fireman dress up outfit.

After church on Sunday, dad and I took Ralph on a field trip. We are acquainted with many firemen and so dad had the genius idea to visit a fire station. We took Ralph to visit a friend who was on duty that afternoon. He got to sit in the truck, look in all the compartments, try on a real coat and helmet, and hold the hose they use on grass fires. Ralph made himself at home in the living room/kitchen of the station, watched some poker on the TV and had cookies the guys had just baked. It was the highlight of his birthday weekend.

On Monday morning, I picked up some grocery store cookies for Ralph to share with his friends at school. His brothers in California and Nebraska called him on the phone to say "happy birthday!" Those awesome boys never fail to call each of their siblings on their birthdays.

So Ralph had a store bought cake and store bought cookies for his friends. I would have loved to make him something fabulous, but he couldn't have been happier either way. It is more important for me to "show up" and be emotionally available to him, than it is to worry about the details. I think we often make the mistake of worrying too much about the event and too little about the child. I feel like we got this one right, this one time.

Foraging

It's almost 11am and Ruby is still sleeping. I keep checking on her and she's definitely still alive, so I'll let her sleep as long as her body needs to sleep.

Kansas State assessments are over for my homeschoolers. Just a few more weeks and they will be finished with school altogether. I may have two or three kids studying at home next year. Haven't quite decided yet. I'm agonizing over it, really. Adding to the list of decisions I need to make.

Today feels like spring, finally. Good thing because Hammy has a zoo field trip today! So glad he has a nice sunny day to visit the zoo with his friends. Tomorrow will be cold and rainy again. Just like me, spring cannot seem to make up it's mind.

Despite the snow and ice, the dandelions are not afraid. They are blooming in all their glory. Our yard has more puffy yellow dots than the neighbors, so today I took a bucket and a short helper out to the front yard. We picked as many bits of sunshine that we could fit in our little bucket.

Back inside, I spent half an hour cutting off the stems and bases, throwing the petals into a pan. We are making dandelion syrup! I just boiled the petals and will let them sit in the fridge overnight to infuse. They smell a bit like cooked spinach. Tomorrow we will add the sugar to preserve. I love to try new things and the kids are fascinated with the concept of foraging.

Baby Maximus

Maximus is such a nice boy. He is easy to entertain, fun to be around, completely cute and quiet as a mouse, unless you lift him up too fast. Then his high pitched squeal might shatter glass!!

He eats what I make for him. He goes to sleep when I lay him down. He gives amazing hugs.

There is really only one area where we struggle to care for him. Drinking.

Max cannot drink out of anything but a spoon. He tips his head back and lets the liquid run down his throat. Can you imagine me spoon feeding him apple juice on an airplane? Not fun.

He has no concept of sucking, so he cannot figure out a bottle or any sippy cup that I have tried. He has no muscle tone in his face and minimal tongue control, so when he tries drinking out of a cup, the liquid runs out the corners of his mouth.

I use a lot of liquid in his pureed food to compensate for what he isn't drinking, but it is not enough. He continues to struggle with constipation as a result.

I'm redoubling my efforts to get him drinking independently. Today we started working on a bottle again. He wasn't too excited about the milk, or maybe he just didn't understand what I wanted him to do, so he kept refusing. I mixed some chocolate syrup into the milk to see if I could get him excited about drinking. He loved the chocolate milk, but still didn't want to work at all to get it out of the bottle.

I ended up cutting a tiny hole in the nipple so that he could have some success. I squeezed his floppy, thin cheeks together to try to help him get a seal around the nipple. I gave him lots of chin support. Uggh. Hard. So hard. We clapped and cheered for him when he finally finished the two ounce bottle!! Half hour later.

I don't care if he is eight. Don't give me a hard time for introducing him to a bottle. He never got to be snuggled and fed by a mommy like a proper baby. He missed out on babyhood altogether and I won't deny him.

Incidentally, today I received a baby picture of Max. He's not really a baby, but it's still precious for me to have so many photos of him from the last few years before we met. Oh, and it's authentic Ukrainian orphanage style to dress boys in pink. No big deal.

Check out the chocolate covered little guy!

Would you like a calculator with that cake?

As he was walking out of the house this morning, my husband struck me as so stinkin' hot that I decided to make him a pineapple upside down cake. It turned out a little dark...think he will notice?

So, instead of an awesome birthday party for Ralph and his friends, I'm going to take treats to his class at school. I'm trying to come up with something really creative. I'm lacking in this department so I'll be searching online photos for something fun.

Zhen ate something again. He has pica, a condition that compels him to eat non-food items. I can't remember if I have publicly shared this or not. He prefers rubbery or foamy items...craft foam, pool noodles, crib mattresses, rubber bands, balloons, and plastic shopping bags are all items that we have found in pieces in the potty. He knows it is wrong, so he sneaks around to feed, literally, this obsession.

This time he ate the rubbery buttons off of a calculator. *sigh* Never dull around here.

Long overdue update

It is supposedly Spring now, but you wouldn't know it by the weather today. Ice, snow, and bitter cold winds have us hunkered down. Good thing I'm slightly disorganized, haha, or I would have put the winter coats away already.

We've enjoyed some glorious days in between ice and snow events. I'm so happy that prom night was pleasant, a bit windy, but it's Kansas, right? No big deal. I surprised Chip by taking him suit shopping. He thought we were just going out to find some shoes! The joke was on me though. When he took of his hoodie at the department store I saw that he was wearing a ripped t-shirt. Imagine a high end suit jacket over a ripped up wife beater! Ah, but we make memories this way, don't we?

Max is healthy and loved and showing us new ball skills like dribbling!! However, the poor dude is BORED when all the other little kids go to school. I'm trying desperately to get him evaluated and enrolled, but the wheels are turning slowly. I hope to have news about starting him before the end of the week.

Max did get to meet his oldest brother last weekend. I'm so glad that Wes could spend a little time with us and hang out with the babies. We don't get to see him nearly often enough.

Ralph's birthday is coming up. He will be six. Six big years that have rocked our world. I'm thinking of putting together a real birthday party with friends and everything, but not sure I can pull it off.

The story of my life lately is lots of big plans that I'm not sure I can pull off. Every day I'm tempted to quit on these plans. Some days I'm sure that quitting is the right and sensible thing to do. Then the next day I'll get a message, or run into someone, or read something that gives me the fire that I need to continue moving forward.

I'm taking a little retreat next week. I'm hoping to enjoy enough quiet and alone time to really hone in on what I need to be doing and how. Of course, I can't just take a retreat, I have to tag it onto something else...

In this case, I'll be traveling to see one of my sons compete in a national track meet. He throws javelin and is in a position to place well. Can't wait!!
