Bigger than a Brand Name

A few days ago I announced that Reece's Rainbow families were invited to a meet up in Kansas City in October. Sounds like fun, huh? I have met the absolute nicest, and most fun people through our adoption adventures. Something automatically clicks when you meet someone with the same soft spot in their heart for orphans. I honestly cannot wait!!

Highlight of our first Midwest Adoption Friends meet-up in 2010!

However, I made some critical mistakes...

First, not all of my adoption friends are Reece's Rainbow families. Forgive me for not making you feel included. I love you and I would be honored for you to join us!! Pretty please?

Secondly, there are former Reece's Rainbow families who no longer wish to be associated with the Reece's Rainbow brand. I understand. Perhaps you were disavowed, or maybe you pulled away on your own. Either way, this event is still for you. We prayed for your children...and for you! We helped raise the ransom to get those darlings home. We cried together over impossible mountains of paperwork. We are a community that is bigger than any brand name.

With these mistakes in mind, I'm inviting my adoption friends to the Midwest Adoption Friends Meet-Up on October 25-27 in Kansas City. This date coincides with the Kansas City DS Guild's Step Up Walk, so you can DOUBLE your FUN! I have a few options for this meet-up, one being rooms at the CoCo Key Water Resort! Please join us to celebrate our families and our community. We ARE bigger than any brand name.

Summer is finally here!

Summer is in full swing here and chaos reigns, as much as it does in any other season!

Theo and Max are in ESY, which stands for extended school year. I guess I'm old because where I come from, we used to call it "summer school." Now-a-days everything is an alphabet soup arrangement: IEP, FSP, OT, PT, ASAP!! Max is SO happy to be picked up by the bus each morning at 7:55am.

Ralph and Zhen are attending YESS camp (there are those letters again!). They are kept BUSY from 8:15am - 4:30pm. They often fall asleep in the car on the way home. I have to leave the house at 7:45am to drop them off.

Last week Ruby and Leroy attended VBS (more letters!!). Jordan and Thomas worked there as helpers. We were ROCKING every single morning last week. Trying to get everyone dressed, each with a change of clothes in a bag, and out the door on time was stressful!!

Tomorrow, two of my big helpers leave for church camp. Today, my mission is to get their camp physicals completed. Nothing like waiting until the last minute, huh?! And I "wasted" the morning on a three mile hike in the country.

It wasn't really wasted because I had some special time with Jordan and Ruby. We had some great conversations! We found meadowlarks, and doves. We picked up cans, found dog tracks, deer tracks and a little robin egg! A happy morning.

Uh oh...

Pretty little egg yolk!!

Max is putting on some weight, but still has those scrawny arms and legs!

I trust he is ready...

It often seems that the really, really important events in life sneak up on me. I'm sorta sentimental, so it's probably for the best. I'd be gushing about it constantly if I had time to let it sink in that

Max starts school tomorrow!

My darling little scarecrow gets on the bus a bit before 8am. At the age of 8 years and 9 months, he will be buckled in to travel a few blocks to the local elementary school for his first taste of formal education.

You know I'm going to have to check in on him as soon as I get the other kids dropped off at VBS, right?

As much as I pushed for Max to start school last Spring, I don't think I'm ready to let him go! Ack! But he looks out the window with longing in his eyes when the other kids go places, so I know that HE is ready, at least. I have to trust in that.

Shame on me...

Shame on me for updating but not including any photos!

Guess who graduated from preschool? Ralph is a sharp kid. Watching him grow is such a treat!

Max is well and happy, but he is not chubbing up as quickly as I would have liked. Maybe he's getting taller or something, but his skinny legs and arms continue to make me sad.

Poor Zhen got too much sun and was sick the next day. His back is pretty red, but he allowed me to rub him down with goop from my aloe plant. Progress.

Ruby...never far away from "her" Max.

Missing this boy. I think he's a bit homesick for us crazies, too.

He loves without fear...

Happy Birthday, dear Theodore Honor Nance. You are beautiful, and a joy to me!

Days like today, I cannot help but think of the woman who ran away from the hospital when you were born to her. She must have been very frightened...possibly on purpose by the doctors. Maybe they lied to her about your survival, or your worth. Maybe they just didn't know better.

I don't hold it against her. I have a great deal of compassion for her, in fact. That Theo was neglected is the fault of an outdated and morally bankrupt system. It hurts kids. It hurts familes. I'd like to help change it.

But through the outright rejection, the undeserved abuse and neglect, Theo has stayed emotionally open. He's damaged (if you only knew), to be sure...but he loves without reservation, without fear. He is my inspiration. I want to be like Theo when I grow up.

A more complete update...

Well, Mr. Twisty is doing great. After a few days, the fur started to fall off on his hind leg, but it's growing back now and he is getting around just fine.

Life here is insane right now. School is out and I'm trying to find a groove. I'm bottom heavy on kids with six of them age eight and under. It's been too cool to go to the pool, too wet and muddy to play outside. We are playing with a daily schedule and buddy system. If I don't make a plan for the summer, we'll never get to do anything fun.

So how is everyone doing?

Ruby is enjoying tap and ballet class. She spends a lot of time making up silly songs. Tonight it was something like, "brush your teeth after you squish that bug..."

Ralph...oh gosh. He's going through a real independent phase. He has a very high opinion of himself and doesn't like to need help, even when he needs help. He recently locked himself in the bathroom at Spangles, a local burger place. I stood outside the door agonizing whether I should go find a manager or just give the boy some more time to listen to me and open the door. I waited. And listened. I could hear him washing his hands (so PROUD!!) and pulling out paper towels. Then he opened up the door with a "what's the big deal" look on his face...then asked for help with the snap on his pants. Oy!

Zhen has grown up so much. He struggles at school with work ethic...or they struggle with him. Not sure which it really is. He's been fine at home except for his LOUD vocalizing. I must shush him a hundred times a day. We are resigned to the fact that he eats stuff, and we just do our best to limit his opportunities to be alone with attractive materials.

Theo had a breakthrough over the past few months. I was preparing to share about him in more depth, but he's been backsliding lately. On the positive side, his growth hormone medication was switched over the winter and we are seeing significant weight gains. He feels so solid and chubby even...makes me happy to squeeze his ample thighs. I remember way back when we first started giving him injections that I could not find injection sites with enough subcutaneous fat.

On the negative side, his mood has gone downhill lately. He acts like he is in pain again but his tests for h. Pylori came up negative. He's really only happy when he is eating or playing in the water. That's my plan for his summer...snacks and pool time.

Max is settling in. He tolerates Ruby, who is all over him, all day long. He is learning how to eat textured food. I'm not using the blender much at all anymore. Tonight I didn't even try to mash his beans. We are still struggling with drinking. I did buy a Haberman feeder and he is learning how to suck a bit, but it's slow going. We finally had an IEP meeting for him last week and the coop has agreed to let him attend Extended School Year (summer school) for five weeks. It's a half day program, so I think it will be a great way to ease him into the school environment.

Hammy finished the school year with the most reading counts points in his whole grade. He loves to read but don't ask him to do any chores...! He's hoping to learn how to swim for real this summer. Let's hope it warms up soon.

Rose is almost done with her lessons for the year, but now that everyone else is home all day, it's tough to get her to do any lessons. She has been rock climbing at the YMCA and is getting pretty good. I may try to find her a harness of her own before the summer is over. She baked and frosted two cakes yesterday all by herself. I'm planning to teach her how to sew a sundress this next week. We are on the lookout for a reasonably priced cello for her to start on in the fall. I talked her out of playing bass...well, she did think the bass was sorta heavy when we went to try instruments.

Jordan is a rock climbing junkie. He picks the most difficult routes and tries different ways of climbing, such as using only one leg and hopping to the next foothold. He's going to try a climbing competition on Saturday. Not sure what to expect, but it should be a great learning experience.

Thomas is playing baseball and really improving. He's also swimming his first ever long course swim season. His hands and feet are HUGE, so I'm thinking that he could be quite fast if he gets his strokes down.. He would like to find some babysitting jobs. He likes kids, is patient, and has great skills in connecting with them.

Chipper is in Arizona for the summer. We miss him a lot, and not just because he is so helpful. It's great to have an extra driver in the family and another set of strong arms, but he needed to be on his own this summer. He is working at a Christian camp and having a great time. I hope he comes home ready to give his all to his senior year of high school.

Rich came home for a few weeks, but is back in California for the summer...working at a camp! I flew to Chicago to see him compete in the NCCAA track championships. He took 8th place in javelin! He is headed into his senior year at Azusa Pacific University.

Wes is working in a little town outside of Omaha. He's got a little rental house and I'm so proud of him. He's been completely independent for almost the last three years. We just don't get to see him nearly enough.

Me, I'm crazy. I'm working on event planning, non-profit fundraising, orphan care programs, helping adopting families, educating myself to advocate for him boys with DS...on top of keeping all the kids happy and alive. However, I enjoy it all. I LOVE it. I wouldn't trade my life...even in these chaotic and frustrating times.

Kitty Drama

Late Tuesday night, my daughter ran into my room crying, carrying her cat. Poor Mr. Twisty's (Mr. Twisty's Twisted Cheese Curls anyone?) hind foot was blown up like a balloon, claws popped out and toes splayed.

My first thought was a spider bite, then I looked closer. Blue stripes were buried deep and barely visible on the cat's hind leg. A ponytail holder. What!

No time to ask questions, I barked out orders, "grab a pillowcase and I'll get some scissors!) The cat was going in the pillowcase because I refuse to get shredded by kitty claws. It took some rough handling to get my hands on that back leg. He must have been in a great deal of pain. Then it took a few tries to get the scissors under the tightly wrapped band in order to snip it.

Mr. Twisty slunk away shaking that back leg. He found a spot to lay, right where he would get stepped on and he didn't move for the rest of the night. Then there was time to ask questions. Who did this? Why? How long was it on? I heard a lot of "I don't remember's."

The top of the cat's foot was dark purple, almost black. I decided to see how it looked in the morning before taking him to the vet. I called in the next morning because his whole leg was swollen, and of course, the vet wanted to see him in the office. I was offered a laser treatment to bring down the swelling. Umm...no thanks. My husband would rather not spend more than $0.75 on a lame cat, if you know what I mean.

I really wondered if Mr. Twisty would have to have that leg amputated, but today he is looking really good. The swelling has gone down considerably, though the skin is still black-ish. A certain little girl did a good deal of growing up over the past few days. Enough drama for one week, don't you think?
